The village of Berrynarbor

Welcome to the Berrynarbor Parish Council Website

Berrynarbor

The village of Berrynarbor, surrounded by steeply wooded valleys, lies in the West Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty between Ilfracombe and Combe Martin. The village has won many Britain in Bloom Awards and Best Kept Village Competitions.

The village has a Parish Church, a Primary School, a Community Shop and Post Office and two public houses.  It is a popular destination for tourists and there are many premises in the village offering accommodation for tourists as well as tea rooms and campsites in the Parish.

There are two children’s Play Areas.  One for smaller children next to the Manor Hall adjacent to the Manor Hall car park, and another suitable for 6 – 14 year olds in the Playing Field off of Pitt Hill. A dedicated dog walking area is accessed off the entrance to the Playing Field. A Quiet Garden, known as ‘Claude’s Garden’ can be reached from Barton Lane.

St Peter’s Church, in the village of Berrynarbor, has a 15th century tower, a 17th century lychgate and a Norman font.

A stream runs through the picturesque Sterridge Valley and out into the Bristol Channel.

Watermouth

Watermouth is within the Parish and has a sheltered harbour directly beneath Watermouth Castle (a Grade II listed country house). Watermouth Castle was built in the 19th century by the Bassett family who were Lords of the Manor. Prior to that, in the 17th Century, the Berrie family were Lords of the Manor, and at that time the Manor was called 'Berrie Nerbert'. The Castle is now a popular holiday attraction.
